Social Interaction and Depression in Elderly Individuals.
Rotenberg, Ken J.; Hamel, Jocelyn
International Journal of Aging and Human Development, v27 n4 p305-18 1988
Examined social interaction and depression among 42 elderly persons. Found depression was negatively correlated with measure of quantity of social interaction entailing frequent conversations and positively correlated with having reciprocally intimate relationships. Findings suggest that depression in older adults is negatively related to having peers to talk to frequently, but positively related to having reciprocal exchanges of negative communications.
