Examined the relationship between hopelessness, depression, social desirability, and parasuicide. Used multiple operationalizations of each construct, comparing two college student populations (one seeking treatment, one not seeking treatment). Linear structural equation modeling revealed that hopelessness related to parasuicide (controlling for depression and social desirability) in the seeking-treatment group, but not in the nontreatment group.
