Reviews methodological issues in the sociological study of suicide, distinguishing between micro and macro approaches. Focusing on critical assessment of macro-level methodology, identifies three recurrent problems: (1) measurement issues on four key variables; (2) problems studying effect of mass media suicide stories; and (3) reasons to adopt cross-national method to test sociological theories for contextual effects.
