Of the 21,183 San Diego County residents who killed themselves over an eight-year period, 52 had been patients of one psychiatric group. The suicide rate increased with age for the county population but not for the psychiatric patients. Although older people generally are at greater risk for suicide, older psychiatric patients may be more responsive to treatment. (Author/BL)
