Mastery of Basic Number Combinations: Internalization of Relationships or Facts?
Baroody, Arthur J.
Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, v16 n2 p83-98 Mar 1985

Counting procedures and thinking strategies are components, and it may be that using stored procedures, rules, or principles to quickly construct combinations is cognitively more economical than relying exclusively on individually stored facts.
