Thinking: How Do We Know Students Are Getting Better At It?
Costa, Arthur L.
Roeper Review, v6 n4 p197-99 Apr 1984

Some indicators include: perseverance, precision of language, problem finding, decreased impulsivity, metacognition, checking for accuracy, transference, flexibility, drawing upon previous knowledge, and enjoyment of thinking.
