While researching Pennsylvania folktales for children, the author found mostly fragmentary stories. She suggests that the transmission of folklore has been disrupted by the disappearance of extended families and traditional storytellers; the impact of formal, rational education; and television. Currently available materials are often not representative of their folk origins. (AM)
