The Status of Variable Rules in Sociolinguistic Theory.
Romaine, Suzanne
Journal of Linguistics, v17 n1 p93-119 Mar 1981
Suggests that sociolinguistic theory with a probability base does not provide a means of saying anything about such questions as social meaningfulness of behavior or communicative competence in any other way than an uninteresting one. Believes a partially empirically based sociolinguistic theory is the least restrictive alternative to a largely empirically based one. (Author/BK)
