A study of 112 medical education networks--medical schools and their associated hospitals--is reported. The balance between the numbers and sources of U.S. graduates who entered first-year residencies in each speciality in the hospitals of each network and the kinds and locations of the residencies obtained by graduates from each school was ascertained.
