Two studies of college students were conducted to determine whether an antecedent of ineffective communication, cognitive incongruence, is related to raised states of anxiety and lower achievement. Student/lecturer congruence, measured by scholastic motivation scales, was positively related to student performance with that lecturer and negatively related to student anxiety. (Author/SJL)
