A discussion of research exploring student-faculty conflict at two colonial American colleges. Social demographic differences between students and faculty is considered a possible cause of conflict. Biographical data of students, faculty records, and student diaries are used to answer: who were the faculty? who were the students in conflict with faculty? and, do differences between the two support the social differences hypothesis?
