In Search of Social Identity: Strategies of Ethnic Identity Management Amongst Capeverdeans in Southeastern Massachusetts
Greenfield, Sidney M.
Luso-Brazilian Review, 13, 1, 3-18, Sum 76
In contrast with other immigrants, assimilation for the Capeverdeans, since they were of part African ancestry, meant ascription to the black segment of American society. Their strategies for the establishment of an ethnic identity are examined in this article. Among these strategies is the speaking of Portuguese rather than Creole in public situations. (Author/GC)
