A historical-philosophical analysis of the professionalization in adult education which summarizes four major efforts directed at making adult education more of a profession. The article outlines problems associated with professionalization and recommends an inquiry into alternative forms of professionalization to avoid the more deleterious aspects of that phenomenon. (EM)
