A survey utilizing both open and closed questions and eliciting the reactions of 1,435 community college-university transfer students indicated that open-response questions can validate or invalidate responses to closed questions, reveal degrees of emotion, guide the researcher in revising the questionnaire, and suggest methods of institutional improvement.
