The effectiveness and ultimate value of the growing number of research institutes in the humanities and social sciences are discussed. Motivations for the establishment, funding and operation problems, and geographic locations are reviewed. Examples are given of different objectives and functions of various kinds of institutes, their organizational structure, and relationship to universities. (Author/LBH)
