Combating Islamophobia on Campus: Racialization, Civil Rights, and the Fight for Muslim Belonging in Higher Education
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v57 n1 p4-10 2025
The sociopolitical rhetoric that Islam promotes terrorism and that Muslims are fanatical permeates most media coverage, presidential candidates' talking points, and law-related policy domains. Since October 7, 2023, Muslim students on college campuses and other venues across the nation have been victims of hate-based attacks, such as being doxxed, stalked, verbally and physically harassed, and assaulted. To understand and address current forms of Islamophobia in higher education better, this article focuses on: (1) the racialization of Muslims; (2) October 7, 2023, and how it contributed to the racialization of Muslims and Islamophobia; (3) how Islamophobia falls under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act's "shared ancestry" that prohibits discrimination; (4) Islamophobia in higher education; (5) Muslim students' sense of belonging and mattering; and (6) postsecondary institutions' legal and moral obligations to combat Islamophobia.
