On Love and Educational Love
Gao Desheng; Carissa Fletcher, Translator
Chinese Education & Society, v57 n5-6 p310-323 2024
Love is the essence of humanity, the power that allows humans to come into being, as well as the power that allows humans to continue on and develop; it is a profound spiritual need for humans, and it is their epitome in the ontological sense. Education itself is a means by which people of the preceding generation love the people of the succeeding generation, and educational love is a kind of "quasi-maternal love," characterized by asymmetry and a giving nature, making preparations from the outset for one's departure; educational love is a kind of moral love, and such love is not only a love of students but also a commitment to the teacher-student relationship, and furthermore a response to a calling to the profession of teacher.
