Critical thinking is a vital skill set that can be learned and applied across contexts. This experimental study tested the effects of feeling awe on adults' critical thinking about art in an art museum visit. A total of 153 adults were interviewed at two different art museums in Copenhagen, Denmark. Adults were randomly assigned to either an awe-induced condition (treatment) or a general condition (control). In the awe-induced condition, adults were asked to recall and describe a moment when they felt awe earlier during their visit, to put them back in that awe state during their interview. In the general condition, adults were asked to describe their route through the museum, to put them in a neutral state during the interview. Adults' critical thinking skills were then measured and compared across the conditions. Results showed that adults in a state of awe demonstrated significantly more critical thinking than those in a neutral condition. Specifically, they demonstrated more evidence of interpreting, evaluating, and comparing, and less evidence of observing. Implications for art museum educators include intentionally designing experiences to foster feelings of awe and wonder in an effort to encourage visitors' critical thinking.
