Federal Grants Increase the Number of School Psychologists
Kelly Vaillancourt Strobach; Katie Eklund
Communique, v53 n8 p12-16 2025
Since 2019, federal grants have supported a broad range of innovative efforts to address the critical shortage of school psychologists and other school-based mental health providers across the country. In collaboration with partner organizations and state school psychology associations, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has forcefully and effectively advocated to promote greater awareness of the value of the profession, address the need for data to better understand the state of workforce shortages, and promote policies and practices that increase access to school psychologists and comprehensive school mental health services. This article highlights some of the innovative ways two significant federal grant programs--the School-Based Mental Health Services Professionals Grant (MHSP) and the School-Based Mental Health Services Grant Program (SBMH)--are providing grantees with funding to address the shortage and the substantial collective impact of these critical investments. Understanding the root causes and impact of shortages is key to informing the ongoing advocacy that is needed to continue to make meaningful inroads.
