The Absence and Salvaging of Love: How Instructors at Institutions of Higher Education Invest More Love in Students
Wei Jianguo
Chinese Education & Society, v57 n5-6 p346-355 2024
The lack of a sense of responsibility and compassion among faculty members and teaching styles that do not foster student interaction are common failings in talent development at Chinese institutions of higher education. Faculty identity and cognitive biases, as well as the weakening of caring in education, are the principal factors leading to this. Bias arising within the orientation of educational evaluations reinforces faculty lack of responsibility and caring; schools' laxity and carelessness with respect to some elements of educational and teaching management are also important factors influencing the faculty sense of responsibility and compassion. In order to improve the quality of talent development at institutions of higher education, instructors must revert to the original educational intent and origin of developing talent. Improving faculty members' own educational awareness and moral development and establishing a proper conception of the role of the faculty are key steps. Strengthening schools' educational and teaching management and reinforcing the "iron cage" of the teaching management system provide an important assurance. By reforming the educational evaluation or instructor evaluation systems, systems innovation can be used to guide instructors to care for students, impart knowledge, and educate people.
