Medical Spanish and Spanish for Law and Justice: A Social Justice Lens
Regina Morin; Ann Warner-Ault
NECTFL Review, n94 p49-72 2025
There exists a dearth of textbooks for teaching medical Spanish and Spanish for law, justice, and human services through a social justice lens. In addition, many texts do not meet the needs of learners with disparate language proficiency levels of Spanish and varying depth and breadth of knowledge about these topics. The literature has identified ideal proficiency levels for learners in Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) courses, but students in LSP classes and certificate programs often have widely varying levels of L2 proficiency and content knowledge. Many of the available texts fail to present the material through the lenses of social determinants of health, building empathy, fostering cultural competence and cultural humility, and promoting social justice, and they reinforce the self-same negative stereotypes LSP courses and certificate programs should help eradicate. This article describes how authentic materials can be used to make content accessible from the outset to learners at all linguistic proficiency and content knowledge levels. The section on Medical Spanish describes high-quality materials, many free and available online, and how to incorporate them into a sample unit that is both holistic and comprehensive. The section on Spanish for Law, Justice, and Human Services discusses developing a curriculum centered around legal case studies presented through films, video series, and documentaries that explore the legal and societal ramifications of numerous human rights issues and provide a counternarrative to commonly held stereotypes.
