"A Place for a Happy Childhood": Forest Kindergarten from the Perspective of Polish Parents
Environmental Education Research, v31 n5 p935-950 2025
The study explored parents' opinions regarding the forest kindergarten attended by their children. Six parents participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore their experiences. The topics raised in the interviews concerned four areas: sources of parents' knowledge about forest kindergartens; arguments for choosing a forest kindergarten; and evaluation of the forest kindergarten and its curriculum. The surveyed parents pointed out the paucity of information about forest kindergartens operating near their place of residence. Their arguments for choosing a forest kindergarten included: the predispositions and personality traits of the educators, the potential of a space conducive to the child's holistic development, concern for the child's well-being, and the idea of eco-philosophy implemented at the facility. They stated that the forest kindergarten is a place where children feel happy. Data analysis showed that parents notice their children's growing interest in the surrounding nature and its elements, broader knowledge about animate and inanimate nature, increased ecological awareness, and improved health and physical fitness. Parents' opinions suggest that the approach to upbringing and education adopted in the forest kindergarten builds children's competencies to take action for sustainable development.
