Colonialism, Comics, and Clubs: A Geography Teacher's Guide to Partnering with Japanese Animation Fans
Geography Teacher, v22 n1 p52-57 2025
Though overshadowed by their Japanese counterpart, Taiwan's and South Korea's comics industries produce illustrated tales that represent and speak back to their host cultures, even when employing common Japanese manga conventions. As Japanese manga is popular with North American youth, Taiwanese and South Korean comics present a potential comparative approach for students to study this source material from these countries. Japanese animation clubs, which often count voracious East Asian comics readers in their membership, can assist teachers in this activity. This essay explores a potential pedagogical relationship between teachers and club members and suggests a lesson plan to fully realize it.
