Generative AI in Education: Rethinking Learning, Assessment & Student Agency for the AI Era
Daire Maria Ni Uanachain; Lila Ibrahim Aouad
Thresholds in Education, v48 n1 p111-132 2025
This chapter investigates the dual role of Generative AI (GenAI) in providing support and feedback to students and in reshaping formative and summative educational assessments, addressing both the burgeoning opportunities for enhancing teaching methodologies and the associated ethical challenges. There is a focus on the necessity for balanced implementation strategies that prevent academic dishonesty, safeguard data privacy, and avoid deepening the digital divide. The paper emphasises the need for pedagogical adaptation while cautioning against the potential cognitive and professional atrophy due to overreliance on automated tools, and the importance of responsible, critical integration of GenAI in educational practices, ensuring that such technologies serve to enhance rather than undermine the quality of education in the digital age.
