Using Nonfiction Texts to Teach Resistance in a Democratic Society
Kelly Welsh
English Journal, v103 n5 p42-46 2014
Teachers have a challenge to teach students to be active participants in a democratic society. To make this happen, students must realize that they have a voice--that their views matter--simply because they are members of a democratic society where all views matter. This article suggests that incorporating historical, nonfiction texts into the English classroom can assist in illuminating historical struggles for justice and democracy, while empowering students to begin to see themselves as agents of social change.
