Strategies of Eighth Grade Students on Inverse Proportional Problems
Mustafa Serkan Pelen
Mathematics Teaching Research Journal, v16 n6 p277-290 2024
The development of proportional reasoning is crucial for higher-level mathematical skills. Various studies have demonstrated that the numerical structures of problems have an impact on the strategies used to solve direct proportional problems. This research was conducted to determine eighth grade students' strategies for solving inverse proportional word problems with diverse numerical structures and to examine whether the strategies vary according to different numerical structures. The participants of the study consisted of 23 eighth grade students. Inverse proportional word problems with different numerical structures were used to collect data. Data were conducted through task-based interviews. The students' answers were examined through content analysis, and the solution strategies were determined. The findings of the research showed that eighth grade students used six distinct strategies for solving inverse proportional problems. The numerical structures of problems affect the strategies used to solve inverse proportional problems.
