Anna C. Strauss; Jenna G. Waggoner; Mhret D. Wondmagegne; Tutita M. Casa
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v118 n3 p199-209 2025
The authors wondered if there was a way to support their reluctant Grades 4, 5, and 6 students in contributing their starting points and strategies and advancing their collective knowledge. They wanted to ensure that the students had the space to develop and take ownership of the strategies they produced through a visual representation of ideas they developed collaboratively when they were considering a solution. They developed the "Strategy Showcase," which empowers students by highlighting their unique strategies and fostering collaboration, giving them a space to develop, own, and refer back to their ideas. This article explains the components comprising the Strategy Showcase, describes how to use it, and describes the impact of its use on the authors' students. It concludes by sharing observations of the Strategy Showcase's influence on the class environment and tips for other teachers interested in implementing these ideas with their students.
