Moving Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers Full STEAM Ahead: Experiences That Integrate Social Studies
Nicole Pearce; Jill Davis
Dimensions of Early Childhood, v52 n3 p32-40 2024
Engaging pre-service teachers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) challenges offers active learning experiences that promote an understanding of the significance of STEAM in early childhood education. By integrating community, cultural, and personal assets, STEAM becomes a versatile approach with endless opportunities for learning and development. The STEAM challenges follow five stages: research, identify a problem, create a solution, test the solution, and present the findings. Pre-service teachers collaboratively progress through these stages during class time, with the instructor initially modeling the process and gradually allowing students to take on more planning and implementation responsibilities.
