Leadership Lessons for Strengthening Crisis Intervention Services
Benjamin S. Fernandez
Communique, v53 n6 p12-16 2025
A school psychologist with a traditional role may fill their days with assessments, consultation, prevention work, and mental health supports. They are also have an extremely important role as crisis response leaders when schools are impacted by some type of acute traumatic experience. Such events have the potential to significantly impact the wellbeing of students if the crisis response teams are not ready and available to support students' needs. Despite the relative infrequency of such events, it is essential to establish and consistently maintain effective crisis intervention programs and procedures. Doing so requires leaders who are able to set a vision and guide readiness with intentional and ongoing team and program enhancements. Benjamin S. Fernandez, a school psychologist with experience leading these efforts shares valuable lessons that can be implemented almost anywhere.
