Formalized Training and Specialization in School Neuropsychology
Wendi I. Johnson; Amanda L. Skierkiewicz
Communique, v53 n6 p24-26 2025
School neuropsychology focuses on brain--behavior relationships and how these connections influence the learning process. This specialized field considers the individual and sociocultural factors that influence cognitive development, using targeted neuropsychological assessments to guide effective intervention. While grounded in pediatric clinical neuropsychology, school neuropsychology distinguishes itself by incorporating neuropsychological components into the educational framework, offering valuable support to parents and teachers (D'Amato et al., 2010; Miller et al., 2022; Reynolds & Fletcher-Janzen, 2009). Expertise in school neuropsychology offers significant benefits for practitioners at all levels. There is a growing need for formal training in school neuropsychology given the increasing number of children with complex medical, behavioral, and academic challenges. This article examines the four educational paths for practitioners to obtain formalized training and why school psychologists should recognize a subspecialization in school neuropsychology.
