Using Census at School to Build Statistical Reasoning
Corinne Thatcher Day
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v118 n2 p94-107 2025
Since data collection technologies has become a part of daily life, measurement and data requirements now permeate many state mathematics standards, beginning as early as kindergarten and extending through high school. For example, the Standards for Mathematical Content, recommend that kindergarteners "describe and compare measurable attributes" and "classify objects and count the number of objects in each category" (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers [NGA Center & CCSSO], 2010, p. 10). High- school students are expected to "make inferences and justify conclusions from sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies" among other objectives (NGA Center & CCSSO, 2010, p. 80). In this article, Corinne Thatcher Day shares two cross- curricular units she developed to address middle- school and high- school statistics standards in the classes she teaches at a small school in the Western United States. The units utilize the American Statistical Association's Census at School platform to engage students in data analysis that exposes them to people and places beyond their rural locale and that are interesting and relevant to their age groups. Along with a description of each unit, she shares ideas for adapting the projects for younger and older students such that the lessons discussed herein can be utilized for any grade, K--12.
