Experiences of International Doctoral Student Mothers at a US Research University
Aidana Sirgebayeva
Journal of College Student Development, v66 n1 p66-84 2025
Female doctoral students often experience several challenges in the program while balancing their personal and family roles. This phenomenological study investigated the experiences of international student mothers (N = 6) while pursuing full-time doctoral degrees, providing insights into how they navigate a research university. The study has one central research question: What are the daily life experiences of full-time international doctoral student mothers caring for their child/ren, pursuing a career, and researching in education? The findings highlight the importance of social support in the success and well-being of female international doctoral students.
