Purpose: While the significance of emotional intelligence (EI) for health care providers has been recognized in various health care fields, its importance is not fully understood in the discipline of communication sciences and disorders (CSD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspectives on EI among students, practitioners, and faculty members to identify the current level of EI in the discipline of CSD. Method: A total of 825 CSD students, practitioners, and faculty members in the United States completed an online survey. The survey consisted of 42 questions including participants' demographic information, the current level of EI exposure, and training EI concepts along with their perception, attitude, and perceived usefulness of EI. The relevance of EI to clinical practice and personal life as well as the needs for EI training programs in the CSD discipline were also asked. Multiple chi-square analyses were conducted to examine whether the percentage of responses on each question was significantly different among students, practitioners, and faculty members. Results: The results of this study suggested CSD students, practitioners, and faculty members surveyed had a foundational understanding of EI concepts, perceived EI concepts to be useful personally and professionally, and have positive attitudes toward developing their skillset in the area of EI. Conclusions: Our data suggested continued efforts be made toward providing EI training for CSD students and practitioners to enhance professional development and patient outcomes. Being the first examination of CSD professional perspectives on EI, the study provides a useful resource in developing curriculum and continuing education programs for students, faculty, and practitioners in various health care fields.
