Eight Ways States Can Build Better Family Engagement Policies

Building stronger relationships between families and schools is increasingly identified as a way to address many vexing issues--teacher shortages, chronic absenteeism, lingering academic and social-emotional effects of COVID-19, and perceived divisions between parents and educators. Because policies and practices around family engagement vary markedly, state boards of education have an opportunity to enhance, amplify, and improve approaches that put it at the center of decision making. This article suggests eight ways they might do so.
