Baofu Wang; Longxi Li; Xiaolu Liu
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v38 n1 p21-28 2025
In recent years, student behavioral issues have become a growing concern. Physical education (PE) provides ample meaningful opportunities to foster personal and social development. Among all the instructional models in PE, Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) stands out as the most suitable model to facilitate the development of social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies. This article defines SEL and the five competencies outlined in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework, draws the connections between different levels of responsibility and five competencies, and concludes with practical strategies for physical educators to effectively enhance students' SEL competencies in and outside of the PE setting using TPSR.
