CommuniTea in the Library: Fostering Relationships with Warmth
Jeannette Bruno; Tineka Scalzo
Assessment Update, v37 n1 p10-11 2025
Wright College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and community college in Chicago, Illinois serving around 10,000 students per year. The majority of our students are First Generation, 36% are Pell-eligible, about 60% work in addition to taking classes, and many take advantage of the Healthy Market for free groceries on campus. In 2021 the college faculty received training from the Wellness Center on being a trauma-informed campus. Since then, the college have developed ongoing opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to center wellness through rest and connection. At the college library they focused on creating a welcoming space, displays that represent the community, and encouraging connection. Modeling a case study where a small veterinary library provided tea bags and hot water to students, they found that students appreciated the gesture and were more likely to talk to library staff when they were in the library. They also found that by providing tea, they welcomed in students who had never been to the library before. In this article, they found when students feel welcome and supported, they will be more likely to ask for help and the library will be better equipped to meet their goals.
