Running a Burnout Support Group for Women Faculty at a STEM Institution
Rebecca Pope-Ruark
Journal of Faculty Development, v37 n1 p66-68 2023
Burnout greatly impacts faculty members across higher education as the culture of academia is designed to push constant engagement, ever-higher productivity standards, and doing more with less. To address burnout, my institution piloted the Women+ Burnout Support Group, open to all women-identifying faculty and academic staff. Group meetings are an opportunity to explore burnout on a personal and professional level in a safe, collegial, virtual space. This article introduces our program and provides practical suggestions for setting up a group and running meeting. While the reach of such a program may seem low, the impact on attendees is high.
