Journal of Faculty Development, v37 n1 p25-33 2023
For faculty members, writing is often the task that is perpetually set aside due to demands of teaching and service in a university setting. Faculty writing groups are one way to encourage commitment, consistency, and support for a successful writing agenda. The purpose of this article is to illustrate one successful example of a thriving virtual writing group that generated a variety of scholarly works and a strong community of support that has sustained over time. Using a virtual modality breaks down geographic and scheduling barriers and opens writing groups to global participation. We aim to build on work that seeks to deconstruct the notion of writing as a lonely, isolating, and individual act. In this article, we share our findings through a reflective process using poetic transcription. A choreopoem displays our findings and each of our individual reflections adds depth and breadth to illustrate the affordances of faculty writing groups. Consistently participating in an online writing group has helped each of us to write more together and on our own.
