Microaggressions and Life Satisfaction among Hispanic College Students at an HSI: The Moderating Effect of Cross-Cultural Comfort
Jonathan R. Trinidad; Theresa C. Suarez
Journal of College Student Development, v65 n5 p566-570 2024
Nearly a quarter of Hispanic college students experience race-based bias and discrimination on college campuses (McLennan & Jacobo, 2018). These experiences often take the form of microaggressions or subtle everyday interactions conveying negative messages toward marginalized groups (Ogunyemi et al., 2020). Among Hispanic college students at both predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), microaggressions contribute to a variety of adverse effects, including higher anxiety (Serpas, 2021) and lower subjective well-being (Hernández & Villodas, 2020). One potential psychosocial moderator that has received limited attention is cross-cultural comfort, the degree to which individuals feel at ease when interacting with others from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. However, more than two decades later, no quantitative studies have examined the moderating effects of cross-cultural comfort on any well-being or student success outcomes in a postsecondary setting. To address this gap, this article examines these variables of interest using a sample of Hispanic college students at an HSI.
