"Nobody's Pulling up a Wheelbarrow of Money": How Campus Contexts Shape Fundraising for Leadership Education Initiatives
Lauren N. Irwin
Journal of College Student Development, v65 n6 p695-699 2024
Many campuses house leadership education programs (LEPs) that offer leadership workshops, retreats, and other initiatives focused on building students' leadership skills and knowledge. Using a multiple case study design, this paper examined how institutional stakeholders across campus contexts navigated fundraising efforts and pursued LEP funding. The data set included 52 university and LEP documents and websites, 56 semi-structured interviews with LEP staff, senior student affairs officers, students, and campus partners, and 16 leadership workshop observations. Findings illustrate a disconnect between campus commitments to leadership and leadership fundraising efforts. Although all campuses expressed formal commitments to student leadership development and LEP units, leadership was rarely named as a key fundraising priority at any of the campuses. Implications for future research are provided.
