Case Study: The 20/80% Rule: Presentation Is the Key
Clyde Freeman Herreid
Journal of College Science Teaching, v44 n5 p54-57 2015
A case that reads well on paper can absolutely fail in the classroom unless the faculty member is up to the task. This article focuses on why the teaching notes are vital to the success of a case, and how they are often more difficult to write then the case story itself. It is in the notes that the reader can see what the writer was trying to do. It is laid out in the Introduction, Objectives, Classroom Management, Major Issues (aka Blocks of Analysis), and References. Just as there are good ways to give a lecture, there is an assortment of ways to encourage discussion, starting with how the instructor looks and acts in front of students and the certain kinds of questions ask that begin a classroom discussion. The way that information is received and incorporated into the final discussion contributes to the final portrait that the class has painted.
