Advocating for Sexual and Affectional Minority Youth
Alec D. Sisco; MacKenzie L. Freeman; Emily N. Srisarajivakul
Communique, v53 n4 p17-20 2024
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Social Justice Committee's annual theme is "Supporting SOGD Youth: Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity." This is the first article in a two-part series reviewing key terminology and ways to support and advocate for youth with SOGD identities, with a focus on sexual and affectional orientation. This term refers to attitudes and behaviors of individuals whose sexual or affectional orientation differs from that of the majority members of a society (i.e., heterosexual). This includes individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, demisexual, queer, and others (Ginicola et al., 2017). Sexual and affectional minorities differ from gender minorities, or individuals whose gender identity differs from that of the majority members of a society (i.e., cisgender).
