Psychosocial Well-Being of Western Faculty in International Higher Education: A Review of Literature
Faith Fitt; Young K. Kim
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v35 n3 p22-35 2024
Internationalization is reflected in higher education in many ways, including the increasing global mobility of faculty. Many faculty members serve in short- to long-term international positions. Many faculty report their international experiences to be positive; however, many have also reported negative psychosocial impacts. The term "psychosocial well-being" encompasses emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of wellness. This study presents a review of literature relevant to the psychosocial well-being of Western faculty who work in higher education outside of their home countries and offers theoretical and practical recommendations for higher education institutions as they prepare to support international scholars.
