Exploring Dialogic Silence in the Classroom
Communication Teacher, v38 n4 p369-376 2024
Silence is not often recognized as a key component within dialogue. Dialogue within the classroom and other settings tend to focus on verbal forms of communication and neglect ways in which dialogue is imbued with silence. This activity explores silence as a multifaceted, literal, and symbolic phenomenon and presents a dialogic activity for students to engage in the meanings of silence within dialogue. Objectives: This activity facilitates students in (1) challenging assumptions, (2) deconstructing colonial/dominant ideas, and (3) relational and culturally rooted dialogue.
