Affecting School-Wide Mental Health through Active Minds
Jonathan M. Solomon
Communique, v53 n1 p17-18 2024
Research has pointed to a critical need for primary prevention and intervention strategies. This has only been magnified since the COVID-19 pandemic and with the shortages of school-based mental health providers. Active Minds is a national organization dedicated to "changing the conversation about mental health" (Active Minds, n.d.-b) by focusing on mental wellness and reducing the stigma of mental illness. Describing their approach as "evidence-informed," Active Minds strives to achieve wide-ranging positive effects by enhancing young people's mental health through peer-to-peer interactions. In this article, Jonathan M. Solomon describes establishing Active Minds high school chapters and some of the activities they did when he worked in the Howard County (MD) Public School System.
