An Analysis of the Impact of Teacher Feedback on Voice Students' Self-Determination

Self-determination theory is a large-scale theory of human motivation that originated from research on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and expanded to include research on work, organizations, and other domains of life (Deci et al., 2017). The three tenets of self-determination theory include: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The purpose of this case study was to explore a private vocal studio teacher's approach to feedback on three voice students' performance in lessons and their students' feelings of self-determination. Forms of data collection for this study included lesson observations, individual interviews with the instructor and each student, and review of material culture (Creswell, 2013). Through data analysis, it was apparent that autonomy, competence, relatedness, confidence, external validation, and positive reinforcement all impacted students' feelings of self-determination. Students demonstrated higher levels of confidence as their feelings of self-determination rose, while external validation and positive reinforcement were specific feedback components that impacted students' feelings of self-determination. Instructors can promote students' feelings of self-determination by giving learners choices whenever possible to foster feelings of autonomy, meet students where they are to encourage their feelings of competence, and to build rapport with students to promote their feelings of relatedness.
