Building History Enrollments through Online Courses for the Professions: Lessons from Teaching the History of Engineering
Christopher F. Jones
History Teacher, v51 n4 p549-572 2018
History departments in universities across the country are facing acute pressure to increase enrollments. In this article, the author describes an effort to boost history enrollments that they have spearheaded over the past couple of years: teaching the history of engineering online. In particular, the author would strongly encourage history departments seeking to reach new audiences to consider developing classes in the history of various professions. In what follows, the author details the initial construction and evolution of an online class in the history of engineering. The author's task was to create an intellectually rigorous course that could be fully online and scaled to meet increasing demand while working on a limited budget. Throughout, the author discusses topics of more general interest including designing courses for non-history majors, teaching online, and creating a scalable class that could be taught effectively by other instructors when the author was unable to teach it.
