School Space as Perceived by Students from a Refugee Background: Polish Context
Anna Mlynarczuk-Sokolowska
Comparative Education Review, v68 n1 p161-182 2024
This article shows the results of research on how Polish school space is perceived by students from a refugee background. The study was conducted through participatory photography and narrative interviews with 15 participants (ages 10-16). Action research was the main research strategy. The results indicate that students perceive the school space through the prism of a wide range of emotions and intensity. From the research participants' perspective, school space is mainly a world of social interactions in which a number of processes take place (related to learning, functioning as pupils, peers, etc.). The space of Polish school is monocultural. The cultural belonging of students from a refugee background is not visible in it. Creating an empowering school space that supports the processes of their education and integration deserves our attention.
