Digital Learning Routes: An Example of Mathematical Modeling

An university in Chile developed a Digital Learning Routes (DLR) for three elective courses in the area of mathematics: (1) limits, derivatives, and integrals; (2) probabilities and descriptive and inferential statistics; and (3) three-dimensional geometry. A DLR is a sequence of e-learning activities that seeks to enable learners to build knowledge progressively. Each DLR offers opportunities for students to explore contextual problems through collaborative projects and modeling activities and to connect mathematics with other disciplines. This article describes one online activity of a DLR that is focused on introducing mathematical modeling. It discusses some features of the learning sequence and types of resources used, highlighting instructional strategies that can help students engage in mathematical modeling and autonomous learning. It also reports a face-to-face implementation of the activity to analyze the appropriateness and usefulness of the proposed instructional strategies in this setting.
