In a Nutshell: It All Makes Sense--The Importance of Brain Education
Long, Bern
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v28 n1 p39-40 2023
In this article the author describes an intervention program for students who were approximately six months behind expected standards. The program, "Prepare 2 Learn," had four components: building prior knowledge; developing mental computational fluency; encouraging a growth mindset; and meta-cognitive strategies. The qualitative data collected after the intervention showed how important it is for students to understand and visualise the role their brain plays in learning new information. Learning about the brain also encourages students to develop good learning actions, or meta-cognitive strategies. The author concludes, brain education and encouraging students to develop positive learning actions, metacognitive strategies, is an important way to support student learning. It inspires students to think deeply, work hard, accept confusion as a normal expected part of the learning process and feel confident in their daily math lessons.
